Economical Transformation of Existing Early Childhood Facility to Increase Capacity
The built form of Branxton Preschool began as a collection of temporary buildings. Whilst he primary goal of the development was to increase child places; the works provided an opportunity to refurbish the existing building’s and provide an enduring and striking presence.
In order to align with the budget constraints, existing veranda spaces were enclosed to gain floor area. A simple colorbond and timber veranda screen wraps the existing entry ramps; providing weather and sun protection. These screens act as a trellis for plants which ground the buildings in the established gardens and play areas. This architectural language is used to create a unifying façade to the buidlings. In addition to the veranda enclosure a small 18m2 addition to the Dalinjer gives space for staff services. The extension provides a legible entry for the preschool and a dynamic façade.
Branxton Preschool expansion demonstrates that ageing buildings can be economically updated, The utilisation of simple screen elements provides a contemporary aesthetic, representative of the progressive nature of the facility.
